What Is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is simply the use of the internet and other digital media, such as digital display ads, TV, radio, and mobile phones. Just as we are also becoming more connected and more dependent on digital media in our everyday life, marketing methods generally reserved for offline use has also been far more prevalent. Now more than ever there has been massive use of digital marketing being used by direct marketers using digital mediums such as social media to get their message out about their business/product/whatever.
How Can We Use Digital Marketing to Build Our Business?
There are two major categories of digital marketing, each involving different sub-categories. Understanding these two forms of digital marketing is crucial to understanding how to best leverage each one, as well as determining which of these methods really work best for the audience we are looking to attract.
The two major forms of digital marketing, as well as their sub-categories, are as follows:
Push Digital Marketing
Push digital marketing involves the marketer actively pushing, as the name suggests, their messages and advertisements to their intended recipients. Good examples of push digital marketing are such as text messaging and email campaigns. Other examples would be using social media using the same methodology as email or text messaging.
With this method you can be treading potentially dangerous ground, as these methods can be highly invasive. However, you can use these techniques safely (as in not get flagged for being spam) when you are using them as a way of following up with an audience you have already brought in using…
Pull Digital Marketing
Pull digital marketing is where the people you are looking to attract are actively seeking out your content. Websites, blogs, and streaming audio & video are examples of the content used for this, but as far as actual marketing these pieces of content some techniques that are widely used today are Pay-Per-Click advertising on search engines, social media, and banner ads; joint ventures where people cross-promote each other’s material; and Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short.) While it can be technically daunting at first to learn and implement, SEO can provide an avalanche of targeted leads who are looking for exactly what you are offering.
From what I have noticed with pull digital marketing, SEO tends to produce some of the highest quality traffic online, as people you want to expose your business to are actively seeking out what you have to offer.
There are methods that utilize both methods of digital marketing, such as autoresponder campaigns, that can include a banner ad or a link to more content, such as a webpage or a direct download of a particular piece of content.
As an internet marketer it is crucial to find methods from both digital marketing categories to truly get your business maximum exposure, to really drive it into high gear. However, in my experience, by far the best and most sustainable way to start building your online marketing funnel, and bring a massive flood of traffic to your content, is through Search Engine Marketing. Once you can get a page to rank on Google you will consistently get massive amounts of traffic consistently for work you only had to do once.
