DoTerra Review: Do Doterra Oils Make A Great MLM Business, Or Is It Yet Another Batch of Snake Oil?

How does DoTerra stack up?

With all the hype, startups popping up all over the place, and just plain information overload it’s way too easy to become swallowed up in all of it. Though some folks will happily publicize any one company as having its coming into existence  similar to a major life changing event, still others will brand virtually all companies as an absolute scam, regardless of evidence, or the lack thereof, in order to back up their claims. Somewhere among the hype & the supposed whistle blowing, the reality exists.

This article was written regarding doTerra for a couple of important reasons:

1. So I can provide you a 3rd party view coming from someone who is NOT a sales representative taking a paycheck from doTerra, and has seen numerous MLMs come and go in the MLM industry, to help you go through the garbage out there.

2. To present to you useful information to show you how to attain enormous success as a representative with doTerra, should you decide to join Doterra. So, without wasting any more time, let’s get right into it.

What is doTerra & What Do They Sell?

DoTerra is a new network marketing company; they are in prelaunch phase as of January 12, 2011. Their key product is a line of different types of therapeutic grade essential oils that possess a plethora of therapeutic benefits as well as well-documented medicinal benefits, all without the vicious side effects of “traditional” medications. They also advertise skin care, hair care and diet supplement products that also have been mixed with DoTerra oils.

Is DoTerra a scam?

After doing some research and checking the Better Business Bureau’s website it became obvious that this business is not a scam. The BBB gave this company the grade of A-, mentioning how little actual doTerra has actually been doing business, and also the miniscule amount of complaints (only 1) and how swiftly the complaint was resolved.

DoTerra Comp Plan:

With what I could acquire on doTerra’s compensation plan, There are 2 ways to get paid with doTerra, with one method that comes with extra goodies depending on how well you do from the start:
1. Retail: doTerra pays out 25% retail commission for each and every customer sale, including 9% commission from preferred customer sales
2. Creating a team: doTerra utiliizes a multi leg system, requiring 3-6 qualifying legs, as in each leg needs to hit a specific rank, for you to reach the upper levels.
They also offer incentives to hit the ground running with Quick Start Bonuses, which get given on a weekly basis. Essentially, you get an extra 20% of your downline’s purchases & sales within their first thirty days. Organizational Leadership Bonuses are also given out for those in it for the long haul. These are paid out monthly & quarterly. When you arrive at the higher, executive ranks, starting at Silver all the way to Presidential Diamond, you also get a cut from the Leadership Pools, which can add up insanely fast.

Requirements for Staying Active with DoTerra:

100 PV is necessary for staying on active status. Plus, if you stay on autoship for these products for an extended period of time, starting at one month, you are given product credits, or basically a discount, for buying products on autoship, up to 30% PV value of your orders.

Final Thoughts:
From what I found in my research of doTerra I feel that this actually is a legitimate company with a product that has actual value; something that people would actually purchase even without a business model attached to it.

Conversely, no business is perfect. There is a conspicuous and potentially significant flaw that has an actual ability of destroying any hopes a representative would have of establishing a dream-lifestyle earnings and live the life of freedom they so desperately want to earn. The one thing that was mentioned halfway into the company’s intro presentation was HOW they want you to primarily market this business opportunity.

The major tactic is person-to-person “marketing,” also known as talking to friends & family about your new great product. This particular marketing “strategy” has decimated numerous formerly close friendships because of the lack of instruction on how to truly, effectively market yourself without acting like a grating pest.

Don’t get me wrong, if you have something that ease the pains of your friends and family you should share it with them, but many people in network marketing are not taught this crucial piece of the puzzle, and they lose many close friendships as a result.

The question I want to ask is, whether you are in DoTerra or are looking to join this or any other MLM company, is this:

What is your plan?

Of course contacting your friends and family is a viable option if what your offering solves a specific problem, but once you have finished speaking to them, what is your plan from there? We need to be real here, you will not get the lifestyle you want in DoTerra just from promoting to friends and family. Sooner or later you will need a plan to bring in fresh talent that want to lock arms with you and take the world by storm.

The problem lies in the fact that approaching people out of the blue, or doing cold calls, can be a stressful and often ego-bruising experience (I know this from personal experience; it’s not fun, folks.) The only real way to bring killer talent to your business is to use an attraction marketing system that draws to you your ideal prospects, the people you really want to work with.

What is utterly indispensable in order to endure (in most cases) and thrive (in all cases) in your business, whichever company you decide on, is a straightforward strategy to naturally bring prospects to you, already seeking you out with credit card in hand, eager to join YOUR business and YOUR team!

Maybe you can conceive of how much better your life can be once you utilize a working system to help you do exactly that. If you can do just that, and team up with an veteran leader to guide you through this important process, there is no telling how far you can go with your doTerra business. If you want to stop with the crap and learn the simple, practical ROCK STAR strategies that work RIGHT NOW to bring in upwards of 50 leads a day on complete autopilot, then click here & learn how to dominate in doTerra.

  • Hans-wilhelm Kelling

It is my considered opinion that doterra is indeed a scam. I was convinced by a salesperson to buy a small , 10ml flask, with a liquid. I have shoulder pains and was promised that my pains would suibside and stop. I faithfully followed directions and put drops of the liquid on my shoulder for several weeks. No improvemnt at all. I still have the pain and am out $ 90.00. I asked for my money back, but in vain. Do be warned. Don’t buy the product. It is worthless.
    Dr. Hans W. Kelling, hans-wilhelm_kelling@byu.edu

    • Kim Wesson

I have a hard time believing that as I was first introduced with a small flask of deep blue for my shoulder and after only one night, I was hooked.  I usually have to take motrin p.m. to sleep and have to take it a couple of times through the night, and since using deep blue I have not taken 1 motrin or anything else.  Deep blue is only for pain not a permanant fix.  You need to try helichrysum, it can actually repair tissue damage.  AMAZING!!

      • Waterviola

the reason some folks have a good response to this product is because they are holistic in other areas of their health – such as diet – this is huge – you can’t eat a bunch of junk or preservative laden food and expect a miracle – you have to be the miracle – it takes many details of correct living in order for herb (oils) to actually be able to have a positive effect on a body – if you are not living a naturalist lifestyle, you will not have much luck with natural products – since they have a very high vibration and your vibration  will be very low in comparison and the 2 will be too far apart to ever be close enough to merge and cause a noticeable reaction.
This product is far from being a scam – it is a valid health tool and some people just need to play “catch up” in other ares of their lives in order to realize this.
I have no vested interest, however I will probably become a distributor in the near future (god willing)  – Col Grif

        • hannah

except any change in our habits for good will accomplish good… no matter how small. So please don’t feel like you have to change everything an become a pure hippy vessel for small healthy changes to work! Essential oils can help no matter what your habits and condition. Incremental changes will add up over time! :)

        • colene

lol not really true this is the only thing i do that is “natural” i dont diet i eat junk food i dont work out other then the tons of stuff i have to do on a daily basis.

    • Beckes

You really need to open your eyes and check again.  doTERRA is NOT a scam.   For one thing, if you are a doctor, you of all people should know that there is never a promise that your pains will subside and stop.   If you were skeptical about using the product why didn’t you ask the person for a sample.  We do give small sample bottles, not flasks of samples.  If you truly are a doctor, which I doubt, as you can’t spell very well, then you of all people should know better than to judge something by using it for more than just a couple of weeks.  Try taking Vicodin or other pain pills and see how dopey you can be.  At least with doTERRA you have side benefits not side effects.  You might want to read up on this some more.  Check out why Vanderbilt University hospital uses our oils everyday and numerous spas throughout the country use only doTERRA essential oils.

      • Steve Steel

Wow! As a distributor for doTERRA I would expect you to respond without attacking! Dr. Kelling is a Professor “Doctor” at Brigham Young University and I know him personally! If doTERRA worked 100% of the time, for everyone and for every illness or problem, it would be a miracle. Sorry, but it’s not! Yes it does seem to work well for many and that is great! For those that it does not provide the desired results it will most likely will be perceived as a scam! Such is business! Even in double blind studies for pharmaceutical products many folks have fantastic results on the products and some on the sugar pills! Regardless of why it works for you Enjoy your results, but you should not attack those who do not experience the same results! Many won’t! It’s just they way it is!

        • JO BLOW

I’m sorry but you better be saying that to both of them. Dr. and Beckes. Dr. attacked this company as a scam… Yes attacked go ahead and read. If he was as open minded as you are demanding of Beckes then he would have simply said they didn’t work for him but they may work for someone else. So the perception maybe a scam for the Dr. but as a professional in a similar field he should know that everything medical is still science and being developed. SO Dr. Slow your roll. Beckes Slow your roll. You both are wrong. and Steve SLOW YOUR ROLL. Step back and see that mistakes of all not just one and don’t attack them if that is your determination. I could care less I will attack all of you because you all have close mindedness about you. I love doterra, I love my doctor and I have used rx with oils and actually got amazing results using them together.

          • Rockymtnmama

the Dr. wasn’t attacking, he was giving personal  experience and first hand information. It’s not the same thing as someone trolling to attack a business. He also left his name and e-mail… which makes his opinion more valid than everyone else on here who has something to hide/ or gain. He was just offering his views as *himself*.

None of the other opinions offered this, and therefore are likely doTerra people who are frantic to pump up the business.
(I have several bottles of doTerra eo in my house and we use them daily, btw!)

          • Rae486

I’m gonna have to disagree.  It is not an opinion when using the word “scam”.  1)He could have simply said it didn’t work for him like how all modern medications don’t work the same way for everyone. “Scam” was too harsh to be just an opinion 2) He used his profession “Dr.” in attempts to deter others from purchasing this product. Another word…”Worthless” Really? Now how can you say that he was not “attacking”. Obviously his words were hurtful and those who are in this business are passionate in what they do.  As I was told by a consultant “keep in mind that it does not cure”, my response “there is no medications out there that can cure otherwise you wouldn’t have to keep taking them”. Only God cures thank you. It is what it is… but really as a professional maybe in the future you could choose to relay your message in a less discriminating, condemning way.

          • Rae486

P.S. I have years of experience as an RN working in the ER. Since then I have become more than passionate towards a holistic approach. I mean you can try an essential oil and if it doesn’t work you could try another one. No side effects like the ones that you experience with modern medicines.  BTW… I only have 3 sample bottles, was just introduced 3 days ago so really I am as unbiased as the rest of them. The lavender worked wonders for my baby, he finally slept throughout the night. Thank God.

          • colene

lavender really is awesome! its one of those MUST HAVES in your house when you have kids. My daughter has alopecia and we use it on her head. The first time i used it on her head about 15 minutes later we were both sitting in the recliner sleeping lol. For me thats great as i dont sleep well. That is just one of the ones that got me into doTERRA

          • Danny

Does doTERRA have any FDA health claims?

    • Mixxlb

I was skeptical of the “hippie juice,” or “snake oil,” or whatever you want to call it, but it works.  Since then I honestly haven’t found a person it hasn’t worked for yet.  Sometimes it takes a different oil for different people.  I can tell you though, that the only people it wouldn’t work for is someone with structural damage.  Some of them do heal scar tissue, sores, even regrow connective tissue and the like, but if you tore your rotator, you’ll need surgery and the pain probably won’t go all of the way away until you do.  Make sense?  Definitely, DEFINITELY not a scam.  I would’ve asked for a sample or something first though.  Some people just want to buy an oil, but I would never expect someone to buy something as crazy sounding as essential oils without trying a sample first. Sorry you’re out the money.  I know they’re vitamins are amazing (dozens of testimonials from friends and family, co-workers etc, all raving about them)  and they have a 30 day money back guarantee for you to feel better or your money back.  That’s pretty tough to beat, and also very “non-scam-ish.”

      • Mixxlb

wrong they’re, meant their.. where is the edit on this thing?? :)

    • Colene

what oil was it they sold you for 90.00? Sorry if it did not work for you but we have had TONS of stuff work for us. I had pain in my shoulder and thought i was going to have to go to the doctor but of course first had to try my oils so i looked up what i needed. This is what i had to do for FOUR days and it was gone I used DEEP BLUE(helps with the pain),LEMONGRASS(which is the one that would actually do the healing) and I actually used Past tense as well for the pain as it was REALLY bad…not sure what you were told to use, but mine went away and is still fine.

there is where I have a problem with Doterra… recommending internal ingestion.  Every book, from every country, every expert says.. Do not take essential oils internally.  There is a reason for that, and it is considered unsafe practice by the Aromatherapy Associations.

    • Annie Yokum

I thought the same thing.  However, further research showed me that all of those “do not take internally” warnings were before we had access to CPTG oils.  Oils do not have to be 100% “real” to get the pure designation, or natural designation.  They can have added synthetics that indeed would be too harsh or unhealthy for internal consumption.  The FDA does not regulate them other than for the perfume industry and I certainly wouldn’t ingest a perfume.  You do raise a valid concern!

      • Danny

From what I’ve been reading the company trademarked CPTG…..not the oils.

    • Edgar83

Im not dead and I injest essential oils everyday…. How can an oil from a plant hurt you more than some creepy ingredient in an rx that you can barely pronounce and have no idea where or what it even came from…..

  • Anniepie

My allergies are better and most of my headaches can be banished with Past Tense.

    • Colene

Past tense is THEE single oil that got me HOOKED…i cant swallow pills well and do not like medication. So i would suffer with my migraines that put me down for at least 3 days a month. I have had ONE migraine/headache since i started using past tense and thats because i had ran out of oil AHHH :) I love past tense

  • katbug

I was a bit weary of the oils, but loved the idea and posability of not having to go to the doctor as much or take as many drugs so I jumped in and tried it.  At first I noticed small benifits such as headaches less often, getting up really easily in the mornings and not getting that sleep feeling after lunch.  I started taking the LLV about 2 weeks ago and again I didnt think much changed except I had fewer headaches and my husband said I wasnt as moody.  I went out of town last Thursday and forgot to take them with me.  That was when I noticed the HUGE difference.  I felt like I had been feeling last month but I didnt realize how bad I felt until I felt great for a while.  I love the LLV and doTerra!  I know everything wont work perfectly for everyone, but goodness I am so glad I gave it a try!!!

  • wannadoterra

I’m thinking of just becoming a member with discounts (pardon me if I don’t know all the terminology yet) . I ordered samples and  in comparison to at least 3 other brands I’ve tried (I know, not many) – I’m amazed at the results I got with just 1 drop of these oils. The woman I spoke too seemed very nice and professional – not pushy at all but going back to the quality of the oils, I’d say they seem pretty high up there. I’m not sure about the “certified” therapeutic grade as I read where there isn’t a board in USA that certifies therapeutic grade oils. You can get a rating perhaps on high quality but nothing that truly certifies them…at least not yet.

    • colene

       did you end up joining?

  • John Clarkr

I was moderately interested in Do-Terra products but the continual referrence to CTPG set off some alarm bells. Off course Do-Terra are the only people to have CTPG products, it is a trade mark registered to the company. Only they are allowed to use it, they own the trade mark.

    • jo BLOW

You know why they trademarked it right???? Because anyone can put a drop of basil or any other oil in a bottle and put some coconut oil or olive oil in it and sell 15 ml as therapeutic grade 100% natural oil so doterra not only trade mark this cptg but they have standards and third party tests done to ensure these high standards are met. Your welcome for fixing your ignorance. good day.

      • dontblow

this Jo Blow must be a cougar…Ready to attack, only bitchy responses ha ha

      • colene

lol we use Coconut oil to actually CALM some of the oils because in there pure form can be really potent. Im 100 positive its not one drop and the rest coconut oil. Try someones Oregano and say that again haha

      • Sonya

Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I couldnt have said it better myself!!

      • Guest

whoa what happened to slowing your roll hypocrite?

    • Helen Tenney

I also have had concerns over the CPTG trademark.  The baseline problem is that there is NO oversight of essential oils.  The companies and their users must regulate themselves.  There is a huge lack of public education and essential oils.  I couldn’t understand why something sold as 100% pure plant oil shouldn’t/couldn’t be used internally.  Now I know that 100% pure could be just about anything, that includes a pure plant essential oil that was collected and processed on equipment that wasn’t cleaned regularly. As a consumer (not a seller) I do feel better knowing that CPTG means that 3rd party testing was done to confirm that there are no contaminants, and 3rd party testing to make sure the oil is actually plant essential oil.

And Thank You to Roy Dunne, I’ve been looking for 3rd party opinions of this company for several years.
      Helen Tenney,
      htenney@nc.rr.com

  • John Clarke

My mistake. It should be CPTG not CTPG. Also, these oil are up to 10x more expensive than non CPTG oil, – the value of a trademark.

  • Klbeeman46

I know the power of pure essential oils. What I don’t like is any MLM concept. If it’s all about you and not the consumer, it’s not good for me. The product should be sold at a real cost. I’d rather buy from a store than my neighbor who duped me into coming to a party. The truth is I never knew about the hard sell and the recruitment until the end of teh party, but after sampling the oils and smelling them, the question was of course you want to take these home and to host your own parties, right? I don’t like the vulture concept. I don’t mind that they are great products, just hate MLM of any kind, it never represents true value of a product. PEO’s are available, maybe not to injest, but I’ve known manufacturers (one in Fair Oaks CA) that do injest, and there are German companies following Waldorf Methods of Biodynamic Bioorganic farming that produce oils that are comparable, available at your local wellness markets. I’ve even found the arnica oil (for muscle soreness) at Target.

    • Colene

doterra is totally not even that way at least none of the people i have met that sell it. I started selling it just because we bought the product sooo much it was dumb not to when its super cheap to join and that money goes twords your first products you buy. The only reason i have had people sign up is because they see how awesome it is and they want it to. There isnt a obligation to buy when you sign up unless you want those extra goodies. I pretty much sell to myself and anyone that wants to know about it i share. If they have a headache i tell them about the oil that helped me and my migraines. so really it depends on the person

  • Toniescobar

  • Pingback: “DoTerra” Review: Is DoTerra A Great Home Business, Or Is It Another Batch of Snake Oil?

  • ScamWatch

Nothing wrong with essential oils, but I do object to the multi level marketing model. It is a pyramid scheme, and I don’t care what anyone says about how this is okay as a real product is involved. Someone (down the pyramid) loses, and that’s the basis for someone up the top of the pyramid for winning. NOT FAIR and not sustainable!

    • All4golf67

If you are truly going to proclaim that you are on Scam Watch, you will want to make sure that you are truly informed.  Yes, there are Scams and pyramids out there and they are bad news because most people lose.  However, I am wondering what you know about the Good Quality MLMs that Donald Trump, Warren Buffett, Robert Kyosaki, Sir Richard Branson don’t?  These are millionaires that understand that putting money in the hands of the “little guy” like most of us instead of giving MILLIONS to advertisers and Middle Men is a MUCH better way to control our own finances in an environment where we are out of control with Corporate America and everyone fearing for their JOBS…
I don’t mean to be confrontational, I just want people who claim to know everything, to do some actual research.  A great resource is a book called Why We Want You to Be Rich by Donald Trump and Robert Kyosaki.

    • Luluworks

I detest the MLM “business plan” of doTERRA and nearly all other essential oil companies that I have researched. I am sold on essential oils, I am not sold on MLM scams and pyramid schemes. They do make the upper tiers wealthy, but…

They also encourage you to just hassle your friends and family and their friends and family and their friends and family… because there is not a real business plan other than … friends and family.
It’s very off putting and is why I have not signed up with doTERRA, despite enjoying the 5 oils I’ve tried.

      • manicmama

My aunt signed me up with her own money. That’s how bad I didn’t want to play the MLM game. I finally tried using one and as cliche as it sounds it changed my life! So much that after having 3 people sold on it just by sharing my experience I thought I’d better start looking at the business. I’ve failed in MLM before. Never graduated from being a done. I too hate the part about nagging friends & family (probably why I failed). With doTERRA I’ve been pretty successful in the few short months i’ve committed to the business. Made money and have actually had people join. Never had that happen before. I love that I still make money even when people join just for the wholesale pricing and choose not to do the business. Its taken the pressure of pushing it on them away.

        • Rebecca Gardner

I signed up with doTerra because I wanted the wholesale prices and the free oils that come when you order by the 15th.

I was treating lupus, depression and hypothyroidism with the oils. I’m still not at 100% (only started treatment a couple months ago and it’s been untreated for years), but I feel better than before I started.

I told my friend about how much better I felt. I wasn’t in it for the money-making side- but she was asking to sign up because she wanted to get the wholesale prices and was already into essential oils.

The thing about these types of products is people expect it to work better than OTC and pharm drugs. They want the results instantly- even pharmacy drugs aren’t instantaneous.

Every business is set up in the pyramid structure! Not sustainable… Amway has been here since 1959 and there are many more… Get educated before you talk first… Network marketing is and always will be the best way for the average person to make an above average income! Someone down the “pyramid” loses if they don’t go to work! They have the same opportunity as everyone else. MLM is just a more efficient way of getting things done. You don’t complain when your boss leverages his time by hiring you to help him get more done! If he has 10 employees working 8 hr shifts he just got 80hrs worth of work done and YOU helped to fund his vacation, car payment and mortgage NOT yours! The ONLY difference between traditional business and MLM is where the advertising is spent. Nike pays Tiger twenty million to wear their apparel mlm companies pay us to spread the word! Every business structure in the world is “pyramid” shaped. The only difference is unlike traditional business I can come in and “work” harder than my sponsor and their sponsor and pass them up just like i did actually;-) In your world you WILL work harder than your supervisor, you WILL NOT pass them up and you WILL NOT make more than them… Get educated! ScamWatch is a dangerous name to have when you are uneducated about the industry! And oh yea they teach mlm in college now…

well said Jason..ScamWatch..kind a dangerous name when u r uneducated..what do u think ur job is now..u r helping ur boss make more money..u get a .50 cents raise..maybe in yr or 2 ..MLM..u can make whatever u want if u work hard..and believe in ur products and help others to do the same..maybe he doesnt know what that means..go get an education before u make an a of yourself on the internet..

i think you need to read into what a pyramid scheme really is and then read again about what doterra does not the same

I use doterra deep blue for aches in my fingers and digestzen (not sure of spelling) for tummy aches.  They work wonderfully.  Best of all, the Breathe helps my husband’s snoring at night so I get a better night’s rest.  They are expensive but I trust the quality.

One thing that has been glossed over here is doTERRA’s retention rate, which is hovering around 65%. Unheard of in network marketing companies! They must be doing something right!

I have been using Doterra for over a year.  I do not market the products to sell them as I have no interest in building a business. I use them strictly for myself and family.   I am on a budget and have been researching opinions on Doterra’s cost.  I am on the monthly order plan and every month question my spending.  I currently purchase the products at 25% off.  I earn 30% per month in credits.  I have to place a $50 order each month and shipping is very expensive at $10.95 no matter the size of order.  So I am committed to $60+ per month.  I love the oils.  I use 8 different oils every other day and a few of them daily.  I have read many sites and opinions today.  Although I see many views…I have not seen any consistent recommendations for another brand or alternative.  I have fibromyalgia and the oils along with an herbal supplement OASIS from advocare have changed my life. I am consistently 95% pain free! I do not ingest, I apply topically and difuse.  I have used them on my children for fevers, stomach illness and other issues with great success.  The expense is tough to swallow but from what I have learned on all these boards is there is no consistent better alternatives.  So I am off to place my order this month.  For my $60 investement this month (incl. shipping) I will get $67.00 of product and $15 in credits for product.  If I drove to a store since I live in the country I would spend $6-10 in gas anyways so shipping does not matter.  Bottom line I am getting $82.00 worth for $50.  Almost half the retail cost…so I am probably doing just fine.

do you not live near a location to just pick up your oils so there is no shipping?
